Federal land ownership patterns and the township/section land grid from the Public Land Survey System provide critical geographic context for understanding patterns of energy production.

The federal lands layer is always visible as one pans across the western US. As one zooms in, labeling appears to denote the various federal entities.

With the view untilted, townships appear at an eye altitude of 50 miles. At an eye altitude of 18 miles, section boundaries and labels will appear.
